Meet Ron: I’m semi-retired having taught high school for 42 years. I now serve as a Visiting Lecturer in the Physics Department at Bridgewater State University wrapping up my 50th year in the classroom. I’ve been fortunate to have worked with many wonderful young people, publish and receive teaching awards but the most memorable experience was in 1986 when I was selected as a finalist in NASA’s Teacher-In-Space Program. Since then I’ve traveled throughout the U.S. to many NASA facilities and work with Challenger Center and the National Air and Space Museum. Some of the following photos result from that travel. I stumbled into photography in 1961 while seeking my first teaching post. When offering the position the Superintendent said, “Whomever I appoint will need to serve as advisor to the Camera Club. Do you know anything about photography?” I gulped, said “yes” and immediately bought a camera and books so I’d be ready for the opening of school. That first camera was pretty primitive and the film I used at the time was the original Kodachrome having an ASA (now ISO) of 10. We’ve come a long way! Since then I’ve been “hooked” and continuously replaced my equipment to follow the evolving technology. I’ve completely embraced digital photography and the new DSLR’s, sold my old equipment on Ebay and never looked back. In recent years I’ve been lucky to have visited much of eastern Canada and the U.S. as well as most of the National Parks and Monuments west of the Mississippi. My favorite subject is scenic landscapes. Despite 50 years of taking pictures I had never participated in any competitions or camera clubs. I’ve enjoyed my first year in Hockomock Digital Photographers and have learned a great deal about image processing and composition. The old dog has learned new tricks.
