Competition Nights

Each month we hold a intra-club competition. Images are submitted ahead of time and sent to an outside judge for anonymous review. On competition night the judge provides a score (as high as fifteen points) and commentary on each image .

What to Expect...

After a year of having our images "juried" by an outside evaluator of photographic expertise, HDP is ready to graduate into "friendly" competition. Each member in good standing (dues paid up by the end of October) will be allowed to submit two (2) images digitally for Competition Night. These images will be evaluated with others from either Class A or Class B - a designation chosen by each member. At the end of the second year the scores from these competitions will be used to move members from Class B to A - at present the exact number has not been determined. Scores will be posted here.

Deadlines...

Generally, the deadline for juried nights is about one month before the meeting at which images will be projected.

This lead time is needed so that the juror has plenty of time to study and prepare a critique of each image.

Exact deadlines for submission of images appear on the HDP Calendar.

Images will not be accepted after the deadline.

File Naming...

The coordinator must deal with a large number of image submissions in a short time.

Thus, in an effort to make the collection of images for projection run smoothly we have instituted file naming conventions for each of the two types of image reviews.

Following these conventions will make the life of the coordinator much easier!

For “juried nights”, images should be named according to the following convention:

X_Image Title_Firstname Lastname.jpg

where X indicates the subject class (G = general, N = nature, P = portrait or B = black & white.)

All images for juried nights must have a descriptive title. Please note that “untitled” is not an acceptable title.

Thus, if Henry Jones is submitting an image in the general category titled “Birthday Party”, the file should be named:

G_Birthday Party_Henry Jones.jpg

Or, if Sue Smith is submitting a nature image titled “Half Dome in the Rain”, the file should be named:

                    N_ Half Dome in the Rain_Sue Smith.jpg

Image Preparation...

In order for your image to look its best when projected at a club meeting, it needs to be sized to fit our projector.

Currently images need to fit within an area 1024 pixels wide by 768 pixels high.

It is highly recommended that you re-sharpen your images after resizing them.

If you need help with these procedures more detailed instructions can be found by clicking here.
